Kato Samiko, Peloponnese, Greece

About the area

Samis Castle, Kato Samiko, West peloponnese

The area of Kato Samiko is one of the earliest populated parts of Greece, with Samis Castle dominating the lake and forest below, providing much-needed security from the pirates and marauders who throughout history have plagued the Mediterranean. Now, just a 20 minute walk away from the house, you can enjoy the outstanding views across the Gulf of Kyparissia towards Zakinthos (Zanti) and Kefalonia.

Well looked-after by the National  Archeological Department, spring at Samis Castle has a profusion of wild-flowers, with a wealth of unusual wildlife such as tortoises, rare lizards and exotic insects.

The Temple at Vassae is an acropolis built by the same architects as the Parthanon in Athens, but unlike the Parthanon, it is completely isolated at the top of an uninhabited mountain. Nestor’s palace, the ruins of Ancient Mycanae, the Venetian monasteries at Mystra and many, many less well-known archeological sites can all be found within a two hour drive. Quite often, the journey is so stunningly picturesque that it is just as memorable as the ancient site itself. Even Delphi is now accessible, although this will entail a drive of more than two hours.

Further afield, you can take advantage of the fact that we are centrally place to visit all the important archeological sites of the Peloponnese. Most well-know is Ancient Olympia, just a 30 minute drive from The Olive Farm, with the original Olympic Stadium and a vast array of ancient Greek and Roman ruins.

If you just want to explore the countryside, you can head into the Lapithas Mountains, our local mountain-range (extremely steep, but only 650 metres in height), or if you need altitude, either  Taiegetos (2,400metres) or Erimanthos (2,200metres) can provide you with alpine views and forest walks.
