Mystras

Mystras is a fabulous site, but the drive to get there is at least as outstanding. From Kalamata the road winds impossibly high through the Teygetos mountains, and down the other side through the Langada Gorge. By the time you reach the site of Mystras, you will already worn out your camera.

The Byzantine city, on the side of an outstandingly steep mountainside, has a huge number of walls, churches and paths to loose yourself in. It will take you at least three hours, if not longer, to do the site justice, and we would suggest that you start at the top of the hill, and work your way down (nominating the driver to stagger all the way back up to the top to find the car).
